Megola

Megola motorcycles, a name synonymous with innovation and rarity, emerged as a pioneering force in the motorcycle industry in the early 20th century. These German-engineered marvels, produced between 1921 and 1925 in Munich, stood apart for their unique design and technical ingenuity, attracting enthusiasts and collectors worldwide.

The Megola's design was ahead of its time, featuring a distinctive radial engine mounted within the front wheel. This innovative placement resulted in a low center of gravity, contributing to its exceptional handling and stability. The engine's five cylinders and side-mounted valves created a total displacement of 640 cc, delivering power directly to the wheel - a unique approach that eliminated the need for traditional transmission systems.

Each cylinder of the Megola's engine had a displacement of 128 cubic centimeters, with a bore and stroke of 52 x 60 millimeters. This configuration allowed the cylinders to rotate around the front axle, creating a seamless integration of engine and wheel movement. Despite its modest output of 14 brake horsepower, the Megola's direct wheel drive provided an unparalleled riding experience.

Among the Megola's revolutionary features were its dual fuel tanks. The primary tank was ingeniously concealed under the bodywork, feeding fuel to a secondary tank above the engine. This design was complemented by independent rear wheel brakes and standard equipment that included a fuel gauge, tachometer, and ammeter.

Megola offered two main variants of its motorcycle: the touring and sporting models. The touring version boasted a sprung rear wheel and a comfortable saddle, while the sport variant, devoid of rear suspension, featured a more powerful engine. Remarkably, the top speed of the Megola reached 85 km/h, with racing versions achieving even greater speeds.

Today, Megolas are highly sought after by collectors due to their rarity and historical significance. With only about 15 known surviving examples, they represent a significant chapter in motorcycle history. Their legacy is further cemented by their inclusion in prestigious exhibitions and collections, including the Guggenheim Museum's 'Art of the Motorcycle' exhibition.

The Megola motorcycle remains an emblem of early 20th-century ingenuity and engineering excellence. Its unique design, technical innovations, and performance capabilities continue to captivate motorcycle enthusiasts and historians alike, securing its place as a true classic in the world of vintage motorcycles.
