Cotton

The Cotton Motor Company, founded by the visionary Frank Willoughby Cotton, began its journey in 1918. Located in Gloucester, this company soon became synonymous with innovation, introducing their patented "triangulated frame" in 1914, a design that was widely adopted until WWII. This frame revolutionized the traditional diamond frame design, which was similar to bicycles of that era.

The company's acclaim in racing was well noted. Stanley Woods' achievements, particularly in the 1923 Isle of Man TT, set the stage for Cotton's race-winning legacy. These victories heralded Cotton not only as a brand of speed but also as a testament to unmatched handling during its time.

The post-war era was challenging, yet Cotton continued to make waves with their machines. While they halted motorcycle production temporarily after WWII, they re-emerged in the 1950s with a suite of innovative designs and models. From the Cotton Vulcan in the mid-1950s to the more advanced Cotton Cotanza, the company consistently showcased their prowess in design and engineering.

By the 1960s, Cotton was back in the racing limelight. Their works racing team boasted talents like Bryan Goss and John Draper. With the introduction of the Villiers Starmaker racing engine, they ventured into road racing, marking a triumphant return to their racing roots.

Yet, all good tales come with their set of challenges. Villiers' decision to withdraw from engine supply was a setback, forcing Cotton to adapt in the face of changing market dynamics, particularly with the influx of Japanese motorcycles.

Despite the challenges, Cotton's legacy continued to resonate. Their move to Bolton in the late 1970s and their subsequent closure in 1980 marked an end of an era. Still, the spirit of Cotton lived on. The late 1990s saw replicas of classic Cotton machines being manufactured, paying homage to the original designs and the timeless beauty of these motorcycles.

Today, Cotton's influence on the motorcycle industry is undeniable. As a beacon of innovation, they were instrumental in setting design standards and revolutionizing racing performances. A legacy cemented in almost a century of excellence, Cotton Motorcycles remains an icon for motorcycle enthusiasts worldwide.
