Tandon

Tandon Motorcycles was a British motorcycle manufacturer with a relatively brief but notable history in the mid-20th century. Founded by Devdutt Tandon, an Indian engineer who moved to the UK, the company began its operations in the late 1940s. After moving to the UK, Devdutt Tandon initially worked for the General Aircraft Company before venturing into the motorcycle business. He set up Tandon Motorcycles around 1947 in North London. The company initially focused on producing lightweight motorcycles.

In the post-World War II era, there was a high demand for affordable, efficient transportation, which Tandon aimed to fulfill. Their early models, like the Tandon Imp, featured Villiers two-stroke engines, which were common in small British motorcycles of the time. These bikes were known for their simplicity and affordability.

Tandon continued to innovate, introducing models like the Tandon Milemaster in the 1950s. This motorcycle boasted an impressive fuel economy, a key selling point in the economically conscious post-war Britain.

Despite their initial success, Tandon Motorcycles faced financial difficulties. The British motorcycle industry was highly competitive, with numerous manufacturers vying for market share. Additionally, the rise of affordable cars reduced the demand for motorcycles. The company struggled to keep up with the changing market and financial pressures. By the late 1950s, Tandon Motorcycles ceased production. Their last significant model was the Tandon Supergale, which was introduced but didn't manage to save the company from closure.

Although Tandon Motorcycles was short-lived, its contribution to the British motorcycle industry, especially in the post-war era, was significant. The brand is remembered for its affordable, efficient bikes that catered to the needs of the average consumer in a challenging economic period.

The story of Tandon Motorcycles is reflective of many small British motorcycle manufacturers of that era, which flourished briefly in the post-war years before succumbing to market pressures and the advent of more affordable cars.
